| Structural Bioinformatics by Philip E. Bourne (Editor), Helge Weissig (Editor) Paperback: 672 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.30 x 10.08 x 7.04; Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; (February 2003); ISBN: 0471201995 Price: $69.95 Table of contents Editorial Reviews From Book News, Inc. Bioinformatics develops methods for manipulating biological data to solve problems in biology. After reviewing the structure of protein, DNA, and RNA, this introduction to the field describes the methods used to derive macromolecular structure data, and the data formats and databases that represent and store the data. The 29 contributions characterize structure classification schemes, structure validation, secondary structure assignment, and protein interactions. Other topics include ligand design, homology modeling, and fold recognition methods. The book may be useful to working bioinformaticians, but is primarily intended for students.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR |

| Proteins and Proteomics: A Laboratory Manual by Richard J. Simpson (Editor); Paperback: 900 pages; Publisher: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory; (December 1, 2002); ISBN: 0879695544 Price: $175.00 Editorial Reviews From Book News, Inc. Written for both graduate students and experienced investigators, this manual describes the general principles, analytical methods, and protocols involved in the study of proteomics. Simpson (Joint Proteomics Laboratory, Australia) begins with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for the separation of proteins in complex mixtures and the preparation of cellular extracts. Further protocols are provided for reversed-phase liquid chromatography, amino- and carboxyl-terminal sequence analysis, and peptide mapping. The largest chapter consists of 13 protocols for using mass spectrometry to identify proteins. Each protocol lists the reagents and equipment required and step-by-step instructions for performing the method.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR |

| Mass
Spectrometry for Biotechnology by Gary Siuzdak Paperback - 161 pages (March 1996) Academic Pr; ISBN: 0126474710 ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.48 x 8.93 x 5.89 Price: US$42.00 It is an excellent book for an outsider to grasp the basic ideas about the two most promising technologies for proteomics: matrix-sssisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) and eletrospray ionization (ESI). Also covered are many other ionization techniques, the basics of detection and the analysis of raw data. Another excellent point is it is very thin ~ 140 pages, you can easily finish it within a day or two. A must buy for beginners. |
