Engaged Scholarship

I am always trying to intertwine my research and teaching with engaged scholarship. For me, this means sharing my insights with the communities I live in and creating opportunities for dialogue. Engaged scholarship has taken different forms for me. One example is collaboration with asylum seekers in Hong Kong to publicize their website (www.seekingrefuge.hk) and to assist the people gaining a voice in the international discourse on asylum.

Other examples are my attempt to expose my students to different religious worldviews in the city and my former involvement with Arab(Americans) in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and the development of a sociocultural profile of their communities.

Examples:

Co-organizer for Refugee Awareness Expo at CUHK, Nov 11-25, 2011 (Panels, workshops, fieldtrips for students; involvement of local and regional UNHCR offices, local NGOs; in affiliation with the Center for Civil Society, CUHK and Christian Action, Hong Kong)
Field trips for students to local refugee and relief work organizations like Crossroads
Interfaith lectures and conversations in the Islamic Center of Hong Kong between students of CUHK and local Muslims
Arab American community portray, Arab Center of Washington (Fall 2003)
Work in the Refugee Network of Seattle (2003)
