Culture exists in its many forms according to ways of listening. Listening
is distinguished from hearing which is physical and involuntary. The
ear is the primary sense organ. Listening is cultivated and cultivating.
Listening is directing attention to what is heard, gathering meaning,
interpreting and deciding on action. Deep Listening is a practice which
explores the qualities of the listening effect. Listening is active.
What is heard is changed by listening and changes the listener. Two
modes of listening are available – focal and global. When both modes
are utilized and balanced there is connection with all that there is.
Focal listening garners detail from any sound and global listening brings
expansion through the whole field of sound. With practice humanity could
be transformed to a culture of listeners. Human values are developed
through the experience of listening. To be heard is healing. The practice
generates the theory to practise practice.
