  • Coface is a worldwide credit rating agency for entreprises active in both electronic and traditional B2B commerce.  The site boasts 35 millions companies listed and is used by 150 partners in more than 70 countries.  The company was formerly France's export credit guarantee agency.

  • Datastream 

  • Financial Information Services Division of the Software Information Industry Association is a forum for exchanges, data vendors and providers and FIs to resolve business and technical issues related to financial information.  The site also has a list of the websites of most of the world's exchanges as part of its Market Data Policy Project, as well as topical links to e-commerce sites. 

  • Fxall is an internet platform for foreign exchange purchasing and selling with liquidity provided by leading global FIs

  • Reuters is one of the foremost providers of financial, screen based  information in the world.  Its  subsidiary, Instinet is the world's largest agency brokerage firm.

  • Sungard is an integrated IT solutions and eProcessing provider for financial services

    Wrappers

The following four companies are the leading providers of financial insurance (insurance to financial products.  They are AAA insurers of municipal debt and providers of structured finance credit enhancements in securitizations.  Because the provide "monoline wraps" for securitizations, they are known as "wrappers."  Wraps typically provide no right of acceleration, but guarantee the timely principal and interest payments on the security.

 

    Re-insurers

 

Re-insurers provide insurance to insurance companies, allowing them to offlay a portfolio's or a very large single policy's risks, typically above a certain loss amount.

  • Bank for International Settlements is the central bank for central banks, facilitating inter-central bank payments and serving as a forum for bank regulatory harmonization.  Site contains international statistics, research and regulatory information

  • International Association of Insurance Supervisors is the international regulatory organization sponsored by the BIS to harmonize insurance company regulation 

  • International Organisation of Securities Commissions

  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is an organization of 24 developed countries that provides governments a setting in which to discuss, develop and perfect economic and social policy

  • World Bank Group is the international agency set up in 1944 to promote post-war reconstruction and world economic development through financial activities to augment those of the private sector. The Group includes the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD); International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC); Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA); and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).  Bank Regulation and Supervision is a World Bank database, set up by James R. Barth, Gerard Caprio, Jr. and Ross Levine in May 2001 provides a comprehensive, cross-country survey of how banks are regulated and supervised.

  • World Trade Organization is the international organization that deals with the global rules of trade between nations. It was set up in 1995 to succeed the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs and is dedicated to promotion of free, open trade in goods and services.

 

Global Industry Organizations

 

  • ACI is the global industry association of foreign exchange and derivatives dealers.

  • Clearing House Interbank Payments Company (CHIPCo) is the electronic system that handles the vast majority of US dollars payments moving between countries around the world, including foreign trade payments and currency exchanges.  It is owned by six US and five non US global banks.

  • Clearstream is one of the two foremost clearing, settlement and depository systems for internationally traded securities.  It was formed by the merger of CEDEL and Deutsche Börse Clearing and is owned by globally active banks.  

  • CLS Bank is a bank formed by a consortium of 70 of the world’s largest FIs to provide a 'continuous linked settlement' system to eliminated settlement risk in FX dealing.  It began operations in 2001.

  • Euroclear is one of the two foremost clearing, settlement and depository systems for internationally traded securities.  It is owned by globally active banks and operated by Morgan Guaranty Trust

  •  International Chamber of Commerce is the international association of companies that makes rules that govern the conduct of business across borders.  It is responsible for the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits UCP 500 that governs LCs.   

  • International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA)  is the global trade association representing leading participants in the OTC derivatives industry. It codifies market standards, liaises with international regulators and does industry research.

  • Loan Syndications Trading Association (LSTA) is the US based industry association with membership from the major banks in the world dedicated to promotion of the secondary market in syndicated loans.    

  •  Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) is an international, bank owned secure messaging service responsible for the transmission of financial advice (eg., letters of credit, transferal of security ownership and payments).

  • Credit Union Central of Canada is the national trade association and central finance facility for credit unions in Canada outside of the Dejardins network of Quebec

  • Bond Market Association  represents securities firms and banks that underwrite, trade and sell debt securities, in the US and internationally.  Site contains statistics, research and regulatory information

  • Investment Company Institute runs a Mutual Fund Connection with extensive information about US investment funds.   

  • National Association of Securities Dealers is the largest securities-industry self-regulatory organization in the United States and owns National Association of Securities Dealer s Regulators which acts as a securities dealers SRO and the NASDAQ  stock exchange.

  • National Venture Capital Association is the is the trade association  representing about 400 firms who manage pools of risk equity capital designated to be invested in young, emerging companies

  • Securities Industry Association is the industry association representing over 700 including investment banks, broker-dealers, and mutual fund companies in the US.

  • Society of Actuaries is the industry association of the professionals that price morbidity and mortality risk for life and health insurance and pensions.  In addition to information about society events, actuarial exams/education and publications the site contains actuarial tables that can be downloaded.    

 

US Agencies

 

  • Fannie Mae  is the federally chartered agency responsible for stimulating mortgage housing.  Although government owned from the 1930s to the 1960s, it is now a company with publicly traded shares.    

  • Freddie Mac is a federally chartered agency responsible for stimulating home purchases through mortgage borrowing through the secondary market.  It is also a publicly traded company.  

  • Ginnie Mae  is the government owned mortgage corporation.

  • Cambell Harvey's Web Page boasts a 6,000 item glossary with 16,000 links as well as interactive options pricing and portfolio optimization models. 

  • CaseNet, maintained by Thomson, is an on-line listing of many pedagogical cases, including financial institutions management cases and cases from the Case Research Journal. 

  • Damodaran On Line is the home page of Aswath Damodaran of New York University.  Although the site does not discuss FIs, it is excellent for corporate valuation and fundamentals of corporate finance, much of which impacts of FI activities.

  • Financial Management Association International  is an association of academics and practitioners that publish Financial ManagementFinancial Practice and Education and Contemporary Finance Digest

  • Harvard Business School Publishing is the largest distributor of pedagogical cases in the world.

  • The History of Economic Thought is a repository of collected links and information on the history of economic thought, built by the New School University in New York, punctuated with entertaining cartoons.  

  • Journal of Banking and Finance  is the major FI academic periodical.  The site has unlimited access to past abstracts of articles. 

  • Journal of Finance is the academic periodical of the American Finance Association.

  • Journal of Financial Economics  provides full text of forthcoming articles freely, but published articles are only available to subscribers

  • Ivey School of Business provides a steady flow of Canadian based pedagogical cases.

  • ABS Net is a good industry periodical on securitization.

  • Barry Schachter's Web Page is a value at risk resource homepage maintained by a practitioner with very strong academic qualifications.

  • Benefits Canada  is a pension and benefits magazine,written for the sponsors of group benefits and pension plans in Canada

  • Bradynet is a site to provide access to live and closing emerging markets bond prices and yields, but also provides background information and analysis.

  • Careers in Business  is a commercial site with free information about banking, finance and other business careers, run by Wendy Tunstall, previously with Bankers Trust.

  • CreditRisk+ is a credit risk measurement technique developed by Credit Suisse and available on the CSFB website

  • KPMG, a major accounting and consulting firm, publishes frequent global, regional and national studies, many available on-line on the financial intermediation industry.

  • International Finance and Commodities Institute (IFCI) Risk Watch is an introduction and guide to the most important official documents in the area of financial risk management sponsored by Arthur Anderson, Citibank, Dresdner Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Reuters, KPMG, Societe Generale and UBS.  The site also contains several international finance cases that may be used in teaching.

  • Philippe Jorian's Home Page contains course materials on risk management and publications of a prominent financial academic based at University of California, Irvine.
