His work has been mostly on computer vision, which is about how three-dimensional information including shape and motion of objects could be inferred from images through vision cues like stereo, visual motion, boundary, shading etc. He also studies the application of computer vision to robotics, object recognition, security, wide-field-of-view imaging, graphics, intelligent transportation systems, and others.
He has served as the chairman of the IEEE Joint Chapter on Robotics and Automation Society and Control Systems Society of Hong Kong in 2001-2003.
In his spare time, Ronald is a keen movie goer, an occasional ping pong player, and pretends to be a music enthusiast.
